Brno - The Administration of Railway Transport Infrastructure (SŽDC) will publish the results of a feasibility study on the reconstruction of the Brno node next Monday. The study was prepared by the company Sudop Brno for more than two years, as several amendments were made to the contract. Thanks to their efforts, the study addresses, among other things, the connection between urban public transport and regional transport.

The study was mainly created to assess the advantages and disadvantages of two station variants. One is the location in the center approximately at the site of today’s fifth and sixth platforms and the Malá Amerika warehouse, the other is the displaced location at the site of the current freight lower station, about one kilometer south of the current station.

The study also addresses the connection of all current tracks to the main station, the connection of proposed high-speed lines, the location of new stops in the city, as well as the connection to public transport, regional transport, and a number of other details. Ultimately, the decision on the location of the station must be made by politicians, for whom the study will serve as guidance on which variant to prioritize.

Last year, a referendum on the location of the station was held alongside the regional elections. Although the overwhelming majority of voters preferred the station in the center, there were not enough of them for the result to be binding.

The modernization of the node and the relocation of the station has been discussed in Brno for nearly a century, yet the old station near the center still serves transportation. SŽDC previously stated that during peak traffic hours it is at capacity limits and that more trains cannot fit, yet starting in December, more long-distance RegioJet trains will begin to arrive, further increasing traffic. The station has also been undergoing an expensive renovation in recent years to maintain its operability, and next year and the year after, a complete modernization of the signaling system is planned. Due to long-standing debates about the relocation of the station, virtually no investments have been made into it.
