Olomouc - Construction workers began pouring the supporting structure of the new bridge on Komenského Street in Olomouc early this morning. By evening, trucks will deliver 1,400 cubic meters of concrete to the site. The flow of concrete cannot be stopped for a moment, as the bridge's structure must form a single unit. Václav Gargulák, the general director of the Morava River Basin, told ČTK this. The construction of the bridge is part of a new flood protection system in this area of Olomouc.
The first trucks with concrete began arriving at the bridge on Komenského Street early this morning from both sides. "The pouring will proceed from the center of the bridge towards the edges. The process cannot be interrupted; the concrete must be perfectly connected, and no joints should form in the structure," Gargulák stated.
The Morava River Basin planned the concrete pouring for today due to favorable weather forecasts. The operation was preceded by demanding planning. "Getting such a quantity of material to the construction site in one day requires not only careful timing but also logistical solutions, backup plans, and the contractor's experience. Two concrete plants will mix the concrete, with a third on standby. The concrete must be produced using the same recipe," said Jakub Vlk from Silnice Group, which is in charge of the bridge construction.
Backup machines are also prepared. Workers will alternate in two shifts for the pouring of the bridge's supporting structure. The concrete will be processed in the formwork using immersion vibrators to ensure the concrete structure meets the required quality. Once the pouring is completed, the concrete will cure and mature. The construction workers will then relocate the utility networks and begin work on the surrounding area of the bridge.
The construction of flood protection measures near the center of Olomouc began last spring and is expected to last four years. It will cost 750 million crowns. The project includes the construction of two bridges on Komenského Street and Masaryk Avenue, the construction of dams and flood walls, the expansion of the Morava Riverbed, and the riverbank.
