Ostrava – The reconstruction of the ice stadium in Ostrava-Poruba will cost more than 105 million crowns. During the reconstruction, a new structure with a heating slab foundation, thermal insulation, and a new concrete cooling slab with a refrigerant distribution system will be created in the main hall. The outdated machine room will be replaced by a new, modern, and more economical one, featuring new cooling technology. This was announced in a press release by the spokesperson of the Ostrava city hall, Gabriela Pokorná.

"The hall was completed in 1998, while a new concrete slab was created over the original non-functional cooling concrete slab with distribution lines. Therefore, it was necessary to remove both cooling surfaces, or rather the complete structure of the concrete surface and the foundation to a depth of nearly 150 centimeters," said Ostrava Mayor Jan Dohnal.

According to him, the new technologies will also reduce environmental risks at the stadium. "The amount of ammonia will be reduced by half. The new furnishings will provide users of the hall with a more pleasant space," Dohnal stated.

The stadium is operated by the municipal company Sareza. "The boards and old seats have been dismantled, construction adjustments to the cooling machine room have begun, and the ammonia has been completely drained. The installation of new cooling technologies will subsequently commence," said Sareza's managing director Jaroslav Kovář.

Sareza spokesperson Lenka Papajová told ČTK that the reconstruction of the main ice surface is currently underway. "Two cooling system foundations are being demolished, and a new cooling slab will be built. Visitors can also look forward to new padded seats. There will be new plexiglass and boards that meet the highest IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation) requirements," Papajová said. The seating capacity will be expanded by approximately 500, bringing the total capacity of the stadium, including standing areas, to 5,000 people.

The reconstruction of the stadium was planned for the period between two seasons, but it will likely be completed only in November. The first bidder with the lowest price offer withdrew from the public contract, and the necessary drainage of ammonia from the original system has also caused a delay in the work schedule. The construction contractor is the consortium Homola–Držík, which was the second in line for the offers.

The hockey club HC RT Torax Poruba and the Ice Skating Club Ostrava operate at the stadium. During the summer holidays, they can utilize the facilities of the Ostravar Aréna for training, and in September and possibly October, they will be able to train at the ice stadium in Kravaře.

"The city is currently addressing the financing of the costs for the mentioned use of the ice surface and transportation costs; the city council will decide on the reimbursement. The preparations of the sports clubs, even before the comprehensive completion of the large hall's reconstruction, should subsequently be facilitated by the commencement of operations of the second ice surface after the cooling machine room is put into operation," Pokorná stated.
