Mikulov – The old building of the Mikulov train station in the Břeclav region will be demolished, and the Railway Administration (SŽ) will build a new one. Together with the city, a comprehensive solution for the transport terminal is being prepared to create a comfortable transfer hub between rail and bus transport, said SŽ spokesperson Dušan Gavenda to ČTK.

Every year, thousands of tourists flock to Mikulov, and a significant portion arrives by train due to the city's good accessibility from Břeclav, where international connections stop from Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, and Poland. "The structural technical condition of the station building and its layout no longer meet current needs," Gavenda said. This applies both to railway needs and passenger requirements. In the relatively large building, there are also several railway apartments, but due to their poor condition, they are no longer used and no one lives in them. The central commission of the Ministry of Transport has already approved the demolition and construction of a new building.

However, the preparation of the construction is still rather at the beginning. "Currently, the assignment for the architectural competition is being prepared, and the scope and structure of the investment from both Mikulov and the Railway Administration are being specified. We are cooperating with the city to prepare a comprehensive solution for the entire area. Subsequently, a selection procedure for the contractor for the study of the entire transport terminal solution will take place," Gavenda specified. Given that the project is still in the planning stage, the exact cost is not yet known, but according to the spokesperson, it will be a financially demanding investment. Likewise, the construction timelines are not yet known.

Trains to Mikulov began running from Břeclav in 1872, when the Břeclav - Hrušovany nad Jevišovkou line was opened. Two years earlier, a connection between Hrušovany and Znojmo was established as a branch from the Vienna - Brno line via Laa an der Thaya and Hevlín. This cross-border connection was discontinued after World War II. The line from Břeclav to Mikulov underwent significant modernization five years ago, which significantly increased the speed to 120 kilometers per hour. Therefore, the journey by passenger train lasts the same number of minutes over the 24-kilometer-long line.
