Rožnov p. R. (Vsetínsko) - The Jurkovič Lookout Tower in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, which was built in 2012 based on designs by Slovak architect Dušan Jurkovič, was visited by a record 47,975 people last year. In December, during the Christmas market and between the holidays, more than 1,100 people climbed the tower, spokesman for the Rožnov town hall Tomáš Gross reported today in a press release.
The year before last, the lookout attracted 44,280 visitors, a year earlier there were 41,085, and in 2015, 35,973 people sought it out.
"The Jurkovič Lookout Tower was accessible on New Year's Day in 2019, when 59 guests visited Karl's Hill. The next opening of the tower is scheduled for Saturday, February 23, when the traditional Carnival will take place at the Wallachian Open Air Museum. It will then be open from early April every weekend and for all four days during the Easter holidays," the spokesman stated. The main season will begin in May.
The building on the hill above the open-air museum was based on the designs of the prominent representative of Art Nouveau architecture Jurkovič, who is also the author of buildings in the nearby Pustevny and Luhačovice.
Jurkovič originally designed the lookout tower at the request of a tourist association in Valašské Meziříčí for the nearby Brňov. The structure in Rožnov is based on the original designs. It stands over 31 meters tall, with the viewing platform located 18.8 meters above ground level. The construction cost 12.2 million crowns.
