BRNO - City councilors are proposing to the Brno representatives an increase in the price for the planned reconstruction of Freedom Square from 148 million to 180 million CZK. The reason is the higher cost of the fountain, which is set to be built in the square. The council demands that it be representative. "This is about the renovation of a square in the center of a half-million agglomeration," explained Mayor Richard Svoboda to reporters today. According to him, the fountain will not change its parameters from the results of the architectural competition; it is more about the quality of the work and some technical elements. The council also decided on Thursday regarding the contract for the restoration of the Marian plague pillar in the square. The project is expected to cost 272,000 CZK, and the reconstruction of Freedom Square is set to begin this autumn. In the near future, further construction work will also affect the underground of Brno. A construction and historical survey will pertain to the underground corridors in the area defined by Veselá, Husová, Panská streets, and Dominican Square. The project is expected to conclude in November and will require 2.13 million CZK, the mayor concluded.
