On Tuesday, July 15th, the international workshop at the Hlubina pit in Ostrava culminated with the participation of architecture students, mentors (Josef Kiszka, Jan Stolín, Vendula Šafářová), and Provoz Hlubina (Jakub Kostruh, Marta Pilařová, David Wojaczek). During the three days (July 13 - 15), the young and promising students were able to fully engage with the topic, learn the technique of spraying, or explore the area from a high perspective, creating new forms for the center of the future square.
Thanks to the division into groups, 11 proposals emerged for a wide and thought-provoking spectrum of uses for the old/new space of the fountain. The proposals address several themes, including the past of miners and the death associated with it, water as a cleansing element of the industrial environment, as well as themes like “Source in the sense of birth, The Deep – a look into the depths, Insight into Balance – reflection, metamorphosis, transcription.” We saw the Polish students spraying water from existing and new pipes, a sense of humor, and also witnessed industrial sounds from the depths along with other humorous proposals. The students played with both the industrial and its current references as well as with new interpretations of industry, water as an untamed element, water that cleanses, water full of play, water as a cycle of life, fulfillment, and water as a beginning.
The resulting proposals will be evaluated by an independent committee composed of professionals from the fields of visual arts and architecture, which will convene during this year's Deepcamp 3.0 from August 14 to 24, 2014, organized by the Provoz Hlubina team traditionally in the premises of this National Cultural Monument. Let’s be surprised by which playful yet serious themes will be the best and most suitable. We already know that the winning proposal will be realized, and there is much to look forward to!
