Přerov

Přerov - The Přerov City Hall has announced an architectural competition aimed at presenting unique discoveries found near Tyršova Bridge. The city had previously indicated that the plot will remain preserved as a quiet zone for future generations. Originally, a parking lot was planned to be constructed here. Archaeologists uncovered the foundations of the Unity of Brethren school and the ground plan of the Renaissance church of St. Mark. The site is connected to the activities of John Amos Comenius.

"The main guideline should be the paved area, how it looks now, and then architects will have free rein. In my vision, a quiet zone could be created here, and the outline of the discovered school could be highlighted. We currently have two million crowns allocated in the budget," said Deputy Mayor of Přerov Michal Zácha (ODS) to journalists today. He noted that archaeologists recommend professionally burying the findings and leaving them underground, and the path between the discovered school and the church should be presented according to them.
According to recent studies, a parking lot with 14 spaces was supposed to be built at the site of the archaeological finds. However, the councilors ultimately did not support the construction. Experts completed the research in front of Tyršova Bridge in May. Based on the research, historical sources, and the significance of the discoveries, experts want to declare the site a cultural heritage monument; a proposal was submitted last year through the Museum of Comenius. "The application has already passed through the Archaeological Institute and is now with the Ministry of Culture. According to insider information, there were no problems with it; nothing should hinder the declaration," said archaeologist Jan Mikulík, who participated in the research, to ČTK today. For experts, this status will mean a higher level of protection for the site.
Archaeologists began examining the area around the under-construction Tyršova Bridge in April last year. In front of the Brethren school linked to the activities of John Amos Comenius, they managed to uncover almost the entire ground plan of the Renaissance church of St. Mark, which, along with the adjacent Unity of Brethren school, formed the spiritual center of Přerov. Experts uncovered the foundations of a bridge gate, a sophisticated sewage system from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, and a medieval oven at the site in front of the new bridge. In Pivovarská Street, they captured the remnants of the foundations of the original city gate as well as the line of the curtain wall. The archaeologists' collections from these locations also included unique tiles with biblical scenes from the late Gothic period and valuable coins, including a gold coin from the time of the Ottoman Empire.
