The Prague Greens pointed out the zoning plan with a skyscraper made of boxes

Prague - The Prague Greens today built a "skyscraper" made of boxes at Victory Square. They aimed to draw the attention of Prague residents to the ongoing discussion of a new zoning plan (ÚP), which they believe would allow for the development of some green areas. About twenty people participated in the happening.
    The Greens hung signs on the skyscraper indicating locations where people, in their opinion, need to fight against developers' plans. "Velké Roztyly, Rohanský Island, Trojmezí, Klánovický Forest, Dívčí Hrady, or the former Žižkov Freight Station - these are just a few places where citizens have come together and successfully oppose proposals for the destruction of greenery or oversized development," said Petra Kolínská, chairwoman of the Prague Greens and city councilor.
    According to her, the new zoning plan includes, for example, a radical transformation of Strahov or the Bubny-Zátory area. "We are not against all construction. However, we demand that it does not endanger green spaces, respects the character of individual neighborhoods, and considers the wishes of those who live in the area. The current way of discussing changes to the zoning plan shows that the city's appearance is shaped more by developers, and the public interest is neglected," Kolínská noted.
    The organizers of the happening were also distributing flyers to passersby, informing them of when and where they can learn about the new zoning plan or how they can get involved in its discussion.
    The city will make the concept of the new zoning plan available to the public on November 2, after which people will be able to submit their comments. Following the evaluation of public comments, a final proposal will be developed. This is likely to be approved only in 2011 and would come into effect in 2012.
    The zoning plan determines the appearance of the city for approximately 15 years. It specifies where construction can take place or where there will be a park.
