Prague - Seifert Street in Prague's Žižkov district is set for repairs in the coming years. In addition to the necessary repair of the tram tracks, the city plans to reconstruct the area, including parts of Seifertova and the adjacent Táboritská Street near Olšanské Square. The council today approved a study that includes widening sidewalks, newly planted trees, and the reconstruction of stairs. The city leadership also approved the preparation of another study that will address the opposite side of the street near the main station.
The study for the transformation of Seifertova and Táboritská streets near Olšanské Square was commissioned by the city in 2015, and it was developed by the architectural studio Edit architekti for the city's Institute of Planning and Development (IPR).
One of the main purposes of the study was to determine how to allow modifications to be made concurrently with the necessary repair of tram tracks so that the area would not need to be excavated twice. The transport company has the start of repairs planned for next year, and according to the first deputy mayor Petr Hlaváček (for TOP 09), the coordination of plans should succeed. The study has been discussed with the transport company and with Prague 3, according to him.
For example, in the past, the city did not coordinate work in the case of Vinohradská Boulevard, where a study was also created, but the preparation of the reconstruction project was not completed in time. The busy street, which is currently closed for urgent track repairs, will likely face further restrictions in 2021.
The study regarding Seifertova was presented to the city council three times last year, but it was not voted on even once. The consent of the council was necessary for the city to commission the preparation of follow-up documentation and the project for the modifications.
The study includes the reconstruction of the historic staircase connecting Rokycanova and Chelčického streets, which will feature a circular bench at its upper part and a water feature at the lower part as a reminder of the pump that once stood there. The shopping center Bezovka is set to be connected with the adjacent sidewalk by a new staircase embedded in the wall of the underground garage, which is intended to facilitate access to shops. Benches and trees are also to be added.
Prague's councilors today also approved the preparation of another study that should address the opposite side of Seifertova Street near the main station. The transport company plans to reconstruct the tram tracks in that area by 2024. Construction is planned in the area, and the Railway Infrastructure Administration is preparing the construction of an underpass that would connect the station with Žižkov and Vinohradská Street.
