Prague airport announced a tender for the reconstruction of the second terminal

Prague - Prague Airport has announced a tender for the reconstruction of the second terminal, which is set to begin next year. The contract for the modernization of the terminal serving flights within the Schengen area, valued at nearly 300 million crowns, aims to increase the maximum number of passengers handled by a quarter to 2,500 people per hour. It includes the reconstruction of security check points, modernization of boarding bridges and gates, and the creation of new commercial areas. This was stated by the airport spokesperson Marika Janoušková.

The expected increase in passengers is, according to the airport, the main reason for the planned reconstruction, which follows the recently completed renovation of the first terminal. The layout of the departure hall, in fact, allows for further capacity increases in the future, up to 3,000 processed people per hour, the airport reported.

The central security check areas will be modernized and equipped with new automated screening lanes, including new X-ray machines. The modernization of the equipment will not only increase capacity but also further enhance safety and comfort levels for passengers, added the chairman of the board of Czech Aeroholding, Václav Řehoř.

Prague Airport aims to begin the reconstruction of the security checkpoints of the second terminal next year. However, a more precise schedule will be drawn up with the selected contractor, depending on the airport's operations, Janoušková noted.

While in operation, the airport also remodeled the first terminal, which is designated for flights outside the European duty-free area. The grand opening of the new version of the first terminal, designed by the architectural studio Chapman Taylor International, took place on June 15. The modernization, which cost 22 million crowns, included among other things the creation of a new passenger information center.

In addition to modernizing both terminals, Prague Airport plans to transform the public spaces in front of the buildings in the future. The airport expects the new design to offer more relaxation zones, clearer parking arrangements, and better transfers to public transportation.
