Prague - The Faculty of Law of Charles University in Prague (UK) has published a work on its history to commemorate the 660th anniversary of the university's founding. The book, which is written in both Czech and English, was compiled by a team led by the faculty's vice-dean, Jan Kuklík.
The book describes the evolution of legal education, the construction of the faculty's building, scientific activities, and student life at the school. "We wanted to describe how law was taught in the past and how it is taught today, what opportunities graduates of the faculty had and have," Kuklík told reporters. For example, readers can find out that in the 17th century, graduates had to host a feast for the entire faculty after their examinations.
A large part of the book is dedicated to the history of the faculty's building in Curie Square, whose designs occupied architect Jan Kotěra for several years. The author did not live to see the realization of his design; the construction was taken over by Ladislav Machoň, who supplemented Kotěra's project.
In 1931, the building was first filled with students. During the war, it served as the headquarters for the SS, and its interior was particularly damaged during the May Uprising of 1945. During the floods in 2002, part of the faculty was flooded, completely destroying thousands of books.
The publication was released in an edition of 3,000 copies. It will be available for purchase directly at the faculty and in Karolinum, with a price around 400 crowns.
