Hradec Králové - The state enterprise Povodí Labe is preparing to repair the walls of the Elbe riverbed in the center of Hradec Králové. Builders will repair 227 meters of walls near the riverbank at Smetanovo and Eliščino embankments on both sides of the Elbe, upstream from the Tyrš Bridge. The walls, which are up to 3.5 meters high, date back to the early 20th century and are already in unsatisfactory condition. The cost of the repairs is estimated by the state enterprise to be up to three million crowns. Hana Bendová, the spokesperson for the company, said this today to ČTK.

The construction will include cleaning the face of the walls, removing graffiti, chiseling all the joints, and rebuilding cavities after stones that have fallen out. The main part of the work will be complete repointing of the masonry up to a depth of 30 centimeters. At the base of the walls, the builders will create a drainage layer for better rainwater drainage. Finally, the walls will receive a so-called anti-graffiti coating.

Povodí Labe expects that the builders will repair the walls gradually in sections from this June to November 2021. "For safety reasons, the sidewalks immediately above the top of the wall and also the areas of the embankment will be closed to the public during the construction," the spokesperson stated. The repair will start on the left bank. Later, the builders will move to the right bank to ensure that people have at least partial access to the heavily used embankments.

The Elbe walls are part of the monument-protected urban fortifications within the urban conservation area, and Povodí Labe collaborated with heritage specialists in the preparation of the repair. "The walls are evidence of the historical development of the city. Therefore, it is necessary to respect the original granite material during their restoration, including the traditional stone masonry craftsmanship, and to preserve the original appearance of the masonry and jointing," said Bendová.

Last year, Povodí Labe carried out repairs at the confluence of the Elbe and Orlice rivers in Hradec Králové. The confluence, which is one of the most famous places in the city, was given a form resembling that of the early 20th century. Builders modified and reinforced the banks of the confluence with stone at a cost of about 12 million crowns excluding VAT. They also removed sediments from the bottom and banks of the Elbe, thereby increasing the capacity of the riverbed.
