The branch of the Prague City Library in Petřiny will begin construction in 2022

Prague – A new branch of the Municipal Library of Prague (MKP) in the Petřiny district of Prague is set to start construction at the beginning of 2022. The library has now obtained a building permit for it. The library is currently searching for a company to build the new facility on the site of the existing branch, spokesperson Lenka Hanzlíková informed ČTK today.

Part of the building, which will be created according to the design by architects from the monom studio and Zavadil studio, will include a small hall for cultural, educational, and community events, as well as necessary equipment for so-called coworking, studying, or creative gatherings. The library spaces will be freely connected to the garden, and a terrace will serve for outdoor seating. A kitchenette will also be available for preparing refreshments from brought ingredients.

The plan for the library's construction was developed about eight years ago. In 2016, a project was created by the mentioned architects, which received a zoning decision two years ago. The library applied for a building permit last year. Hanzlíková previously stated that the new library should be completed within two years of the start of construction work.

The Municipal Library in Prague also plans to open its first branch in January next year, where readers will be able to borrow and subsequently return books through self-service devices without the assistance of a librarian. The self-service library kiosk will be located in the space of the Centrum Černý Most shopping center in Prague 14. The plan is for self-service book return devices to be available at all branches. Self-service returns have been functioning at the Central Library on Mariánské náměstí in Prague 1 since the summer of 2020.

The Municipal Library in Prague, established by the capital city, has over 40 branches and operates three mobile libraries. By the end of 2020, the library's services were used by 153,000 registered readers. Last year, they borrowed about 3.5 million printed books and 4.1 million digital documents. The library collection included 1.7 million books, audiovisual recordings, and more. It holds the third-largest library collection in the Czech Republic after the National Library and the Moravian Library in Brno.
