Plzeň – Plzeň will start repairing the 104-year-old stone Wilson Bridge over the Radbuzain the city center again on July 1, five years after a complete reconstruction. The reason is shifted paving stones due to extreme traffic load. This is mainly caused by trolleybuses that brake at traffic lights on this technical monument. Construction work to repair the pavement, scheduled to last about six weeks, will begin, said Deputy Mayor Pavel Šindelář (ODS) to ČTK. The Wilson Bridge will be completely closed during the reconstruction at a cost of several million crowns, including for public transport.
From July 1, the second phase of repairs of the Roosevelt Bridge, which connects the city center with the Roudná district, will also begin in downtown Plzeň. The reconstruction costing 30 million CZK will also lead to a complete closure of the bridge for all traffic until the end of the holidays; in July, it will also include pedestrians.
Due to the large number of repairs, today the Road and Motorway Directorate announced that together with the construction company STRABAG, it has completed work on Sukova Street in Plzeň in Bory, which was done 1.5 months ahead of schedule, and it was opened in both directions with two lanes on Thursday. "After the wearing course has matured, around a month later, we will carry out final road markings and clean the surface of loose aggregate," said the director of the Plzeň Road Directorate, Zdeněk Kuťák.
The city examined whether the construction of the Wilson Bridge with a five-year warranty was exactly according to the project, and according to Šindelář, it was confirmed that it was. "The repair consists of replacing the base layer of the road and re-installing the pavement; adjustments will be made for stormwater drainage and other work," he stated. The detour route for public transport will lead along Anglické nábřeží, to be used by trolleybuses 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, buses 34, 35, 57, and night lines N2, N3, N5, and N6.
On July 1, a major repair of the structure of the Roosevelt Bridge will enter the second phase. "During construction work, it became apparent that the bridge is in worse condition than we expected. It is indeed necessary, and we have started it just in time. The repair will be more comprehensive than originally planned," said Deputy Mayor Michal Vozobule (TOP 09). According to him, the deadline for reopening at the end of the holidays should not be jeopardized. During the current first phase, only public transport can use half of the bridge and pedestrians can use one sidewalk. From July to the end of August, it will be completely closed to everyone, including pedestrians in July, and traffic will be routed via detour routes through General Patton Bridge and around Bolevecký Pond.
