Work (Brno Region) – A new glass entrance hall with a wall that reflects the memorial itself, a renovated café, and two viewing platforms are now available for visitors to the Mausoleum of Peace at the battlefield of Austerlitz in Prace in the Brno region. The works, which included park modifications, the construction of an own repository, and administrative spaces, cost 81 million crowns, said the curator of the memorial, Ondřej Buček, to ČTK.
"Of the total amount, 50 million was a grant from the regional operational program, and 30.7 million crowns were contributed by the South Moravian Region. The work lasted two years, and the exhibition in the museum had to close for the last six months,” Buček stated.
The first traces of the modifications lead visitors from the parking lot, where a path made of broken granite was created, continuing through park modifications on ramps to the memorial, and the most visible change is the glass wall in front of the museum building, which enhances the experience of visiting the site.
The viewing platforms at nine meters on the north and south sides of the museum offer views of the entire memorial area. However, the reconstruction mainly means an increase in comfort for both visitors and staff at the memorial.
"Visitors have access to a covered area in case of bad weather where they can wait for their tour, and our café was in dire need of renovation. For staff, an extension of the basement repository for storing collections has been added; until now we had been using the repository in Šlapanice. On the ground floor, four new office spaces were created in the extension,” added the curator.
The memorial was officially reopened today after the repairs by representatives of the South Moravian Region, but visitors were able to take a look for the first time two weeks ago during the museum night.
Repairs and modifications at the memorial of one of the most famous battles are far from over. In autumn, the modernization of the current exhibition will begin, which will reopen for the 220th anniversary of the Battle of Austerlitz in December 2025.
"The new exhibition, for which the region has allocated 10.5 million crowns, will open the museum more and make it accessible to visitors. It will be a continuation of the existing exhibition in terms of content, but it will improve and modernize the form of communication. It will be interactive with multimedia elements. It will follow the concept of the overall transformation of the memorial area and will function as an integral part of it,” said Deputy Governor for Culture František Lukl (STAN).
The Mausoleum of Peace was created in honor of the victims of Napoleon's victorious Battle of Austerlitz in 1805. It is the natural center of the heritage zone of the Austerlitz battlefield. The memorial and museum are managed by the Museum of Brno.
