Ostrava – The Ostrava city council has selected a new interested party to purchase the land with the so-called Ostrava skyscraper on Ostrčilova Street in the city center. The proposal for its reconstruction was prepared by the studio of the world-renowned architect Eva Jiřičná. The city first selected an investor for the redevelopment two years ago, but the previous interested party ultimately did not sign the relevant contracts, and the city began searching for a new one last autumn. This was announced to reporters today by city hall spokesperson Gabriela Pokorná.

Two interested parties applied for the competition, and the winner offered a purchase price of 55 million crowns excluding VAT. They also agreed to pay 6.48 million crowns for the transfer of documentation. "We want to save the third tallest building in our city, which is why we have clarified and effectively simplified some procedural matters related to the sale plan. For example, we no longer aim to buy back residential units and parking spaces," stated Deputy Mayor Jiří Vávra (ANO).

However, the city still insists on a fundamental condition, which is compliance with the design from the AI-DESIGN studio, created under the guidance of Jiřičná and architect Petr Vágner. The proposal for the tower house was developed between 2020 and 2021. The building maintains and proposes its reconstruction and extension. The object is expected to contain up to 76 new apartments, ranging from one-bedroom units to duplex apartments.

During the reconstruction, the reinforced concrete structure should be preserved. It is expected to have a green facade, including central irrigation, a reception area, or a green roof over the parking building.

The 22-story tower has been vacant since 2013 due to technical defects. Major issues include non-functional cladding and inadequate safety parameters, particularly fire protection and escape routes.

After the New Town Hall and Bolt Tower, the building is the third tallest structure in the regional city. The topic of its reconstruction or possible demolition has been discussed repeatedly. The city ultimately decided to save and reconstruct the building, which is intended primarily for residential use.

The building stands at a height of 68 meters and is only a few minutes' walk from the New Town Hall building. The Ostrava skyscraper was built between 1965 and 1968 as part of the Jindřiška housing estate. The high-rise building, designed by architect Jan Slezák, was originally intended as a residential building. However, it was only used for this purpose for a few years before being converted into an office building.
