Renovation of the former Prior in Pardubice will take longer

Pardubice – The repairs of the former department store Prior in Pardubice will take longer due to its poor condition. They were supposed to be completed last autumn, but according to the investor, the work will ultimately finish in the second half of next year, as stated in a press release. The building has been closed since autumn 2019. Prior was the first shopping center in Eastern Bohemia in 1974, and in the past, K-Mart and later Tesco operated there.

The building of the former Prior is not in good technical condition. Since 2019, it has belonged to the Atrium group, whose shopping center is structurally connected to the building being repaired. "After a long discussion with the building's project managers, we decided on a complete renovation and replacement of the ceilings, including the replacement of the entire roof structure. The repair work is extensive," said the managing director of Atrium, Oldřich Špůrek.

At the end of March, the construction company erected a tower crane, installing it within the footprint of the reconstructed building. The crane will assist with the construction of floors and the delivery of materials to the upper levels. Workers will complete preparations for the new ceiling structures in April.

The reopening of the building is expected in the second half of 2022. A supermarket will be located on the ground floor and shops with consumer goods will be on the upper level.

The Prior shopping center was designed by architect Růžena Žertová and was built in a record time. Three years elapsed from the start of construction to the grand opening. The red skeleton with blue retractable awnings that shaded the ground floor showcases was intended to attract customers' attention. The unique red facade, which was once disliked by the local communist cell, will be preserved by the new owner.

The building stands on Masaryk Square, formerly Buidovatelů Square. In 1985, the Labe Hotel was completed there. The Afi shopping center, now Atrium, was built next to Prior between 2007 and 2009. Both buildings are connected. As a result, Prior lost its unique entrance with a retractable glass portal.
