Olomouc - The renovation of the historic building of the Olomouc polyclinic SPEA in the city center has been nominated for the first edition of the Rudolf Eitelberger Award, which the association For a Beautiful Olomouc wants to grant. Eva Navrátilová from the Olomouc National Heritage Institute considers the reconstruction a prime example of sensitive restoration of a historic site. Last year, heritage conservationists also appreciated the repairs made to other historic buildings.
"The experts were pleased with the replacement of the original wooden casement windows with precise replicas," Navrátilová stated. On the other hand, she believes it was unfortunate to replace the entrance doors with a glass wall with automatic opening.
According to Navrátilová, a whole range of other construction works from last year can be considered valuable or at least acceptable from the perspective of heritage conservation. "This includes the repairs of heritage-protected houses on Lafayette Street, where, for example, a Renaissance portal and Baroque door fillings were restored, or on Lost Street, where the facades were adequately repaired, the rain windows were refurbished, and where the overall reconstruction respected all valuable elements of the originally Gothic and historically remodeled building,” Navrátilová listed.
The heritage conservationists in Olomouc were also satisfied with partial modifications of the houses on Upper Square, where the stucco decorations were restored. The repair of the facade and the replacement of windows of the house on Narrow Street, which now more closely resembles its Art Nouveau form, also deserve recognition according to Navrátilová.
The Rudolf Eitelberger Award will be presented by the association For a Beautiful Olomouc for successful realizations in the fields of architecture, urbanism, and heritage care for the first time this year. According to Martin Horáček, the public will learn next week who has received the glass sculpture from artist Jaroslav Koléšek. This year's twelve nominated buildings exceptionally reflect the period since November 1989. From next year, the award will be strictly annual. Among the nominees, besides the polyclinic, are the Senimo department store, the Museum of Art building, the administration building of the Morava River Authority, the House at the Golden Pike, and the renovation of Upper Square with the Arión Fountain.
Rudolf Eitelberger von Edelberg lived in the 19th century. He was a native of Olomouc and a co-founder of art history and heritage conservation in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.
