Opava - The renovation of the heritage-protected Müller House in Opava, which has been ongoing for more than two years, is nearing completion. The construction work is expected to be finished in a year. The total costs are estimated at 38 million crowns. Currently, restorers are working inside, participating in the restoration of classical paintings. Petr Kašpar, who is responsible for the project, told ČTK.
Müller House is a historical building located on Komenského Street in Opava, not far from the Silesian Museum, which had an archaeological site here. It is protected as a cultural monument. Originally, there was a castle mill powered by water from the castle moat. It stood in the outer courtyard between the main and outer castle walls, at the spot where the moat ended. In the 16th century, it was repurposed into a castle kitchen and, in the first half of the 17th century, into a granary.
The current house was created from a baroque reconstruction of the structure in 1726 and served as the residence of the castle administrator. After the demolition of the castle, this is the only preserved building of the original castle complex. During the First Republic, there was an exhibition focused on the Czechoslovak legions. The current project includes an extension with a café that will connect the house with the main exhibition building of the museum.
"We have completed the rough construction work, including the main installations. The repair of the baroque truss is finished, and the roofing has been completed. The interior stucco plaster has been finalized, and the repair or replacement of windows and doors has been carried out," Kašpar listed. Currently, restoration work on the interior classical paintings is ongoing, and construction work on the connection to the main exhibition building is continuing.
The reconstruction of Müller House began at the end of 2015. It included extensive archaeological research, which revealed that the area had been inhabited as early as the Middle Ages. Archaeologists discovered the oldest preserved truss in Opava and its surroundings, as well as the original baroque ceiling and wooden baroque floors. The age of the found elements dates back to the 18th century.
