The candidate for the position of the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University in Prague (ČVUT) was elected on November 10 at the meeting of the Academic Senate of the Faculty of Architecture. The head of the studio and the Institute of Design II, Associate Professor Dalibor Hlaváček, will succeed the current dean, Professor Ladislav Lábus, starting from February 2022. Dalibor Hlaváček received the necessary absolute majority of votes in the first round of secret voting. Out of the fifteen-member Academic Senate of the Faculty of Architecture at ČVUT, nine senators voted for him, two abstained, and four voted for the candidate, architect David Kraus. The faculty elected a dean for the following four-year term 2022–2026. “The election was won by a candidate who knows the environment of the faculty, the entire university, and international platforms of architectural schools well. The candidate announced his intention already in the spring and did not raise doubts in the academic community that would lead to the search for someone else. Ultimately, this role was taken on by students, and the participation of another candidate enriched the course of the election and, in a way, enriched the mandate of the election winner,” said the current dean, Professor Ladislav Lábus, about the election. Doc. Ing. arch. Dalibor Hlaváček, Ph.D., is an authorized architect and educator at the Faculty of Architecture at ČVUT, where he studied and was appointed an associate professor. He leads a studio there and has been managing the Institute of Design II since 2018. He focuses on the theme of sustainable architecture and design-build projects in education. In 2008, he founded his own office, dh architekti. He is involved in academic bodies of ČVUT, publishes, and lectures in the Czech Republic and abroad. As the future dean, he wants to utilize his experience from architectural practice as well as his knowledge of the academic environment from many years at the Faculty of Architecture, in the senates of the FA ČVUT and ČVUT, and in the European Association for Architectural Education (EAAE), which focuses on improving the quality of architectural education in Europe. He outlined a review of the study program, the establishment of a clear strategy for science and research, and the development of international relations as one of his main priorities. He considers the development of administrative support and infrastructure for study and work at the faculty as key. Doc. Dalibor Hlaváček wants to improve communication and the culture of communication with students, emphasizing a personal approach. He will systematically encourage and support open feedback from students and its reflection. The new dean wants, among other things, to support student activities and associations and to establish the position of a faculty ombudsperson. He promised to pay special attention to the issue of equal representation of women at the faculty.
