Pardubice - In five months, the central part of Dukelských hrdinů Square in the fifth district of Pardubice will change its appearance. After the reconstruction, it will receive a new surface, urban furniture, and new greenery in pots. In the future, the area currently used as a parking lot should also serve for cultural and social purposes, said the mayor of the fifth district Jiří Rejda (ANO) to reporters today.

"My dream and my vision is to bring a bit of culture and something new to Pardubice. I would be very pleased if a maypole stood here during the spring months and folk creativity and similar things returned,"
Rejda stated.

The district also plans to hold traditional Christmas gatherings with residents under the Christmas tree and sports games for children in the square.

The area will be paved with granite cubes and concrete tiles. Unlike in the past, there will be sidewalks for pedestrians along the perimeter and in the middle. Two green areas with memorials to Jan Kašpar and a monument to fallen pilots, which line the square, will not be reconstructed by the city hall for now.

The modifications will cost approximately nine million crowns, including VAT. The district will pay from its budget, with two million crowns received from the Pardubice city council.

Previously planned projects for the square's reconstruction were too costly. There was consideration of an underground parking lot, a fountain on the surface, circular benches, and trees, but this would have cost about half a billion crowns. The next option was to repair the damaged concrete area and create a relaxation zone for 40 million crowns.

The rectangular square is about a quarter of a kilometer long and is the largest in Pardubice. It is located in the middle of the Dukla housing estate from the 1940s and 1950s. In the past, it served, among other things, for military parades.
