Brno - The construction of the futuristic Sonocentrum in Brno is nearing completion. Currently, work is underway on the installation of interiors, and once all the dusty work is finished, the musical equipment and lighting will be installed. Testing operations are set to begin around April 10, investor Jiří Štopl from SONO records told ČTK today. The first public concert will be a performance by the band Goldfish on April 25.
The construction, costing several hundred million crowns, is to be the most modern music club in the Czech Republic. Investors want to bring bands of various genres, and it will also serve as a recording studio, including a restaurant and hotel. The Sonocentrum was built in a gap in Veveří Street, and the main part of the building is a giant concrete sphere, which will house the music club. "Given that you won't find a single right angle in the sphere," Štopl smiled, "everything is challenging and untested, which is why various unexpected problems have arisen during construction."
The concert hall has three floors with two large balconies, capable of accommodating even large orchestras and can also function as a dance floor. If the audience is seated, it can hold 700 people; if standing, there is room for 1200.
The restaurant will have 200 seats and is to be open during the day, while the hotel will offer 39 rooms. Štopl believes that the Sonocentrum will become a center not only for live culture in the Czech Republic but also in Central Europe. The initial concerts before the summer will include performances by the German band N.O.H.A., Manfred Mann’s Earth Band from the UK, the Duke Ellington Orchestra from the USA, and local acts Tři Sestry, Ewa Farna, and Bratři Ebenové. The organizers plan the most concerts for the autumn.
The construction of Sonocentrum became well-known even before the first shovel hit the ground. Former mayor of Žabovřesky Aleš Kvapil and secretary of the Brno-střed municipality Radovan Novotný went to prison due to it, as they demanded a bribe from Štopl to ensure a smooth construction process.
