Přerov - The newly built and recently opened Tyrš Bridge in Přerov will see cars driving on it for the first time next week. The opening of the bridge for automobile traffic is related to the completion of the first phase of the bridge's abutment construction. This could also relieve the difficult traffic situation in the city. Lenka Chalupová, spokesperson for the city hall, said this to ČTK. The previous bridge served motorists until the end of World War II, after which it was replaced by a footbridge for 60 years.
Builders are completing the first phase of the southern abutment two weeks ahead of schedule. "At the end of next week, cars will drive onto the newly constructed bridge for the first time. This will be a historical event, as this route served only pedestrians for over 60 years. The bridge was passable for motorists and carriages until the end of World War II, and when the Germans blew up the structure in May 1945, it was replaced by a footbridge exclusively for pedestrians," said Michal Zácha (ODS), deputy mayor of Přerov.
The property management department of the Přerov city council has requested early use of the construction, and it is expected that by next Friday at the latest, cars will be able to travel over the bridge. The route will be one-way and will lead from the center of Přerov towards the local sokolovna. "From the bridge, one can turn left and right - only the actual traffic will show us how this solution will meet transit needs. In the case of complications, the situation can be resolved with a mandated direction of travel," Zácha added.
The completion of the first phase of the Tyrš Bridge's abutment will provide drivers with at least partial relief, as after four months of closure, they will be able to enter Jateční and Mostní streets again. However, they must also take into account that the upcoming construction of the second phase of the southern abutment of Tyrš Bridge will close Spálenec Street for three months starting June 20.
The new Tyrš Bridge was opened by the city leadership on May 8. The construction, costing 120 million crowns, is among the city's largest investments in recent years. The bridge's design was created by academic sculptor Alena Šrámková. It is adorned with concrete trees and a massive bison, for example. The bridge, spanning the Bečva River, was built on the site of the original bridge from 1903 and has been under construction since August 2010.
