Brno - The complete reconstruction of the roofs at Veveří Castle continues with the renovation of the largest roof in the area, which will total 17.5 million crowns. Lenka Florková, the castle's curator, told ČTK. The current stage is the last of the extensive roof reconstruction at the castle and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. All roofs were originally in a state of disrepair, and it was not just their covering. Some beams were infested with wood-destroying pests.

"A large part of the roofs is already finished. The roof over the refreshment area, the building with apartments, above the section and the towers, and over the workshop building. Now it is the turn of the sheep pen building, which is the largest roof at the castle," Florková stated.

However, even after the repair of the last roofs, the renovations of the castle, which dates back to the 13th century, will not end. "We want to continue with the adjustments to the exhibition, we only have a few rooms left in the basic tour. We also have a project for the surface treatment of the middle castle, and it is necessary to install a backbone electrical distribution," the curator listed just a few more items that need to be carried out in the near future.

Experts describe Veveří Castle as the Moravian Karlštejn. Originally a late Romanesque and early Gothic castle, it has undergone many renovations over the centuries. Modifications from the 20th century, when it was supposed to be converted into a conference center, severely damaged it, and from 1989 to 1999, it basically just fell into ruin.

In 1999, it came under the administration of the National Heritage Institute, which has been gradually restoring it. One of the largest and oldest castle complexes in the Czech Republic reopened to the public in 2002, and in 2018, it was visited by over 90,000 people.
