Prague – The new building of the Vokovická kindergarten in Prague 6 for one hundred children could be constructed in 2021 and 2022. The facility will replace one of the existing buildings, which is in poor technical condition. The kindergarten's capacity will thus increase to 150 children. The total costs for the demolition of the existing building and the construction of the new pavilion, including design documentation, are estimated at 75 million crowns. This was stated today by the councilor of Prague 6, Marie Kubíková (ODS).
"Currently, the overall construction and technical state of the building is deplorable; constant repairs and construction interventions are unprofitable. For these reasons, for instance, an extension is not feasible, and reconstruction equals building a new facility," the councilor said.
According to the spokesperson for Prague 6, Ondřej Šrámek, the selection procedure for the contractor could be announced in the first half of 2021. The determination of the date depends on the outcome of the appeals process by local residents against the current design of the building, authored by architects Štěpán Matoušek, Theresa Kjellberg, and Martin Beneš.
Critics of the project point out the excessive tree cutting in the area and the planned placement of a transformer station within the kindergarten's grounds. This arises from the interpellation of the chairwoman of the Parents' Association for Vokovická Kindergarten, Jana Večerníková, presented last year at a meeting of the Prague 6 council. According to Kubíková, disputed points with the citizens were addressed at a joint meeting, and project modifications were agreed upon.
"The information about placing the transformer station directly within the grounds of the kindergarten is not true; approximately 16.2 square meters will be fenced off from the current plot, which will be outside the kindergarten's fencing and independently accessible from the street," she added. However, according to Šrámek, the residents' appeal has not yet been withdrawn.
The total costs for the demolition of the existing building and the construction of the new pavilion, including design documentation, are estimated by the councilor for education in Prague 6 at 75 million. The city district received a grant of 14 million crowns from the capital for the investment project.
Prague 6 is investing 245 million crowns in education according to the approved budget for 2020. This year, 15 million is allocated for the construction of Vokovická kindergarten.
The current form of the three-class Vokovická kindergarten building was created in the 1930s and 1940s. According to the councilor, the building was not originally intended for education.
According to the Ministry of Education's registry, there are 400 kindergartens in Prague. Recently, there has been a shortage of places mainly in the outskirts of the metropolis. City districts establish kindergartens and elementary schools, while secondary, higher vocational, special, language, and basic art schools are overseen by the city hall.
