Prague - The Prague magistrate rejected the appeal from Prague-Troja against the construction of the gorilla pavilion in the northern part of the zoo. It deemed the objections unfounded. The zoo can thus continue with preparations for the construction, said zoo director Miroslav Bobek to ČTK today. The city district's statement is being sought by ČTK.
The city district argued that the construction of one of the last remaining meadows near the original Prague estates is being addressed without public discussion. Mayor Tomáš Bryknar (Trojský kůň 2014) previously told ČTK that there is no development plan for the zoo for the next 15 years, and it is unclear how transport will be managed. According to him, the arrival of visitors by car to the zoo greatly burdens the city district. Last year, nearly 1.5 million people visited the zoo.
The new gorilla pavilion in the upper part of the zoo will replace the current one, which is unsuitable primarily due to its location in the lower part of the zoo, which is threatened by floods. The spaces in the planned pavilion will be two to three times larger compared to the current one. Besides the breeding group, there are plans to house a group of non-breeding males there as well.
According to plans, the pavilion will have an area of 2,500 square meters and, according to the mayor, despite being partially embedded, it should be ten meters above ground level. However, according to the city hall, such a structure does not belong under the historical estates of Hrachovka and Sklenářka.
