Kadaň (Chomutov Area) - Löschner Square in Kadaň is gaining a new appearance. The revitalization of the space will cost approximately 15 million crowns, with nearly 13 million of that covered by a grant from the Regional Operational Program (ROP) Northwest. The construction will be sealed over the winter and should be completely finished by May next year at the latest. However, a larger part of the square is already accessible to the public. This was stated to ČTK by Libuše Vydrová, head of the construction department of the Kadaň City Office. "We wanted to make the square accessible and also open it to traffic as soon as possible, so that its reconstruction would limit traffic in the city center to the absolute necessary time," Vydrová said. According to her, about two-thirds of the square are accessible. The rest will be completed in spring, with the latest deadline for the entire square to be handed over by the contracting company being May. Originally, the not very well-maintained grassy area will be transformed by the reconstruction into a relaxation zone with a small fountain and benches, which will be separated from the square by concrete blocks with built-in lighting. The modifications include the areas between the fire station, the residential block at Rafanda, and the vicinity of St. Anna's Church. "New sidewalks, stairs to St. Anna's Church, and next to Rafanda are being created, and the greenery is being gradually restored," said Jan Šerák from the city construction department. The space is named after Kadaň native Josef Wilhelm Löschner, a professor at the medical faculty of Charles University in Prague and the founder of modern balneology, the study of healing waters and their effects on the human body. From 1865 to 1868, he served as the personal physician to Francis Joseph I, and in 1870 he was granted the title of baron. Since 2009, he has been commemorated in Kadaň by a stone monument with a memorial plaque located right in the square bearing Löschner's name.
