Krnov (Bruntál region) - The city of Krnov continues with the reconstruction of the protected architectural Střelecký dům, designed in 1906 by the internationally renowned architect Leopold Bauer. More than three million crowns are currently being spent to repair the fencing, including the entrance gate, and to pave the area in front of the main entrance. This was reported by Dita Círová, spokesperson for the Krnov town hall.
The building houses the Méďa leisure center. The city has been gradually renovating it since 2008. Because the overall reconstruction will cost tens of millions of crowns, the city is proceeding in stages, doing part each year.
Gradual renovations have included a café and gas connections, new outdoor drainage has been laid, the northern and southern terraces have been repaired, some windows have been replaced, wooden floors have been renovated, and the entrance doors have been replaced with an exact replica of the originals. This year, the roof over the classrooms and storage in the southern wing of the building was repaired, Círová described.
The fencing around the area was, according to her, devastated and its repair necessary. "Since the Střelecký dům is a cultural monument, the fence will also honor history. It will not be an exact replica of the original, but an imitation made according to period photographs. The fencing will have brick columns topped with roofing - ceramic beaver tiles, and the filling will be made of larch wood," stated Vlastimil Štverák from the Krnov Department of Education, Culture, and Sports.
The area in front of the center also urgently needed repair. Štverák stated that previously it was only continuously repaired by filling potholes with asphalt, which was ineffective, and giant puddles formed after rain. "This surface was removed by construction workers, and now two drains will be installed for surface drainage. Following that, a new stone bed will be created, onto which road cobblestones will be laid," described Štverák. A mosaic sidewalk for pedestrians will also be created in front of the building.
Círová stated that the Střelecký dům is part of the architectural heritage in the Moravian-Silesian Region, similar to Bauer's other works, such as the Sokolovna building in Krnov or the Breda department store in Opava. The Střelecký dům is one of the unique works of individualistic modernism in Silesian Krnov, just like the Flemmich villa from 1914 by architect Otto Prutscher.
Bauer, a native of Krnov, remodeled the Střelecký dům from an older Empire building. Initially, it was used not only by shooting associations - in addition to competitions in the adjacent garden, parties of the German elite were held in the house. During World War II, it served as a hospice. After 1945, the house was confiscated and five years later it became the House of Pioneers and Youth. After 1989, "pioneers" in the name were replaced with "children," and since 1997 the Méďa leisure center has been operating in the building.
