Brno - At the turn of November and December, restorers will complete another part of the repairs to the chapel at Mohyla míru. The reconstruction cost the South Moravian regional office 2.7 million crowns. This year, it was possible to restore the gilding of the altar mensa, repair the marble steps and several statues, and restore other parts of the chapel, said regional councilor Jan Letocha. Mohyla míru is a 26-meter high Art Nouveau monument built in the early 20th century in honor of 16,000 victims of the Battle of Austerlitz, in which Napoleon defeated the Russian Tsar and the Austrian Emperor. Its restoration began in 1995. The first part of the monument was successfully repaired in five years. The reconstruction has been ongoing since 2003, when the South Moravian region became the new owner of the monument. This year, restorers modified the outdoor memorial plaques and removed thick layers of paint from the entrance portal and its figurative decoration. "Compared to the original assumption, the repair of the metal elements covered in corrosion turned out to be extremely challenging," added the councilor. Restorers will unveil the new appearance of the monument on the occasion of memorial events commemorating the anniversary of the Battle of Austerlitz. Last fall, an exhibition about the battle was completed, and by 2010, a new pavilion is expected to be built near the monument. The exhibition will recall the impact of the results of the Battle of Austerlitz on the present and the historical context.
