Jiří Janďourek

Liberec - At the head of the newly established office of the architect of Liberec will be Jiří Janďourek, the current external associate of the mayor. He was the only applicant in the selection process for the position of the city's chief architect. Originally, another person applied, but they ultimately did not participate. The mayor of Liberec, Jaroslav Zámečník (SLK), informed journalists about this today.

The establishment of the position of city architect has been discussed for a long time in the fifth largest city in the country; according to supporters of this idea, it should have a positive impact on the architectural and urban character of the city. In the newly established department, Janďourek will work with two other architects, a transportation specialist, and a landscape architect. According to Zámečník, all positions are filled except for the transportation specialist.

According to the mayor, the office will soon focus on some transportation projects. "For example, on Vítězná street, which is set to undergo surface reconstruction and adjustment of some sidewalk conditions. Then there will be Tržní náměstí, where an architectural competition is being prepared," he said. The square is also related to the planned construction of the adjacent Nová Pastýřská road. For it, the city architects are preparing new assignment parameters in July. The original proposal from the designers, for the road to be up to 21 meters wide and for the noise barrier to be 35 meters long and four meters high, is not favored by the city leadership. "That didn't seem like a happy solution to us for the center of the city, even though it is not our idea. So precisely the architects should deal with how to do it, if possible without noise barriers and if possible, the road not to be wide," added the mayor.

The architect's office will also deal with developments that will influence the character of the city. The mayor mentioned the upcoming project for the construction of the residential area Zelené terasy Kunratická, the planned development of Textilana, or the solution for the unattractive location known as Papírové náměstí in the lower city center. The office should also create a city manual for public space. This should unify, for example, the surfaces used on communication routes. "So that there isn't a situation like at Soukenné náměstí, where several materials meet at the tracks in front of the Dunaj and then it looks like a hodgepodge," the mayor stated earlier. The office will also serve as a service for architectural competitions in the city.
