Olomouc - The completion of the Slavic Gymnasium in Olomouc is expected to begin this year. A four-story building is to be constructed in the courtyard of the historical building, which will offer a modern gym, a cafeteria, specialized classrooms, and standard classrooms. Currently, the project documentation is being finalized, and the investment is not expected to exceed 180 million crowns, said Miroslav Kubín, head of the investment and European programs department of the Olomouc region, to ČTK today. "The project documentation is expected to be completed in about a month, and it is planned to announce a tender for the construction contractor during the holidays. In the optimistic scenario, construction work will begin this year," Kubín stated. According to him, the region will use funds from a loan from the European Investment Bank for the completion. The need for another building has been discussed at the gymnasium for many years. It will replace the current wooden structure, which was built in the 1970s as a temporary solution. "The building was constructed for ten years, and we still have to use it today. The school has grown since then, and the current buildings are no longer sufficient for our capacity. The new building will feature modern specialized classrooms for chemistry, physics, biology, including laboratories, and a computer science classroom," said Radim Slouka, director of the Slavic Gymnasium. Both teachers and students are also eagerly awaiting the new cafeteria and gym, as the current spaces do not meet their needs. The cafeteria will also be used by other schools in the area. An interesting feature will be the planned playground on the roof of the building. The gymnasium is currently located in a historic building on Jiřího z Poděbrad street and in a building on Pasteurova street. "The capacity on Pasteurova street is ten classrooms, but there are 14 located there. After the construction of the new building, we would alleviate this building. In the future, we are also considering modifications in the historic building, where a modern library or community hall could be created," Slouka added. The Slavic Gymnasium in Olomouc is the oldest institution of its kind in Olomouc. Currently, it is attended by nearly 1,000 students from across Moravia.
