Dobříš (Příbramsko) - Dobříš in Příbram wants to convert the former cinema into a community center, which the town lacks. The leadership of the nine-thousand-strong town wants to obtain a grant for the project, said Radek Vystyd (TOP 09), the councilor for local development, to ČTK.
“Currently, the only cultural house in the town is the former synagogue,” Vystyd stated. However, these spaces are not sufficient, even though a large number of cultural and social events are held there.
Plans for the reconstruction of the cinema, which has not been screening films for several years, were prepared by the former town hall leadership. It was expected that the library would move into the renovated spaces. The estimated costs were set at 57 million crowns, which Vystyd considers too much. “Together with the architectural office that won the architectural competition, we started addressing this issue and are changing the project to turn it into a community center, while also looking at the funding,” the councilor stated.
According to him, the cinema has not been screening films for about ten years, and people mostly travel to Prague for movies. “It is true that Dobříš is now a suburb of Prague; it’s a 30-minute ride away. On the other hand, I believe that culture should be supported by the town and will need to be supported,” the councilor concluded.
For example, the former cinema is also being converted in Votice in Benešov, and it is to become a multifunctional center that will serve for organizing cultural and social events for people from the town and the wider region. The complete reconstruction will require around ten million crowns, most of the costs will be covered by the European Union.
