Brno – The Brno-Židenice district revitalized Juliánovské Square for 11 million crowns. The municipality had the fountain, which had not worked for decades, restored. The work also included planting greenery and creating underground reservoirs for rainwater, used to irrigate the trees and lawns. Petr Kunc (TOP 09), the deputy mayor of Židenice, told ČTK.
The work began last year and was completed this summer. The municipality officially opened the square today. "Juliánovské Square is one of the two main squares in Židenice, alongside Karáskové Square. We renovated Karáskové Square a few years ago, so now we proceeded to revitalize Juliánovské Square," Kunc stated.
According to him, the fountain had not worked for years. "We restored it, and after more than 30 years, it has started to serve again. We also created a project for handling rainwater. We channel water from the entire area of the square, which is approximately 650 m², into underground storage tanks," Kunc said.
The reservoirs have a capacity of 20,000 liters. "We then use the water to irrigate the lawns, and we will also use it for watering the trees. We planted 20 new trees," Kunc noted.
Half of the costs were covered by a grant from the city hall, and the other half from the municipality's own budget. The Židenice district has around 22,000 residents. According to Kunc, the council approves a budget of about 180 million crowns, with about 10 to 15 million crowns allocated each year for investments in the environment.
