Brno - The repair of part of the roof costing three million crowns was completed a few days ago at the Brno Káznice. The city will invest approximately five million crowns next year as well, the city hall informed in a press release. According to the opposition, more money needs to be allocated. The building on Bratislavská Street is set to transform into a creative center in the coming years. The long-prepared project is now awaiting the issuance of a building permit. Before the renovation, estimated to cost half a billion crowns, begins, the most critical areas need to be repaired.

"The roof of the Brno Káznice is one of the most extensive roof areas in Brno, second only to Špilberk. We have recently carried out necessary repairs on part of the southern wing, where the wooden structure was at risk of collapsing onto adjacent buildings,” said Deputy for Property Management Karin Podivinská (ANO). Workers replaced wooden elements and roofing. "Technically it was quite demanding. It was necessary to hydraulically lift the supporting wooden columns, then replace the wooden trusses to which these columns are anchored, and reset the columns,” she added.

The city plans to continue with repairs next year as well. However, according to opposition councilor Tomáš Koláčný (Pirates), the amount of five million crowns is insufficient. "The building needs at least twenty times more financial support for the roof remediation to remain safe, operable, and to continue being used,” he believes.

The Káznice was established on Cejl more than 250 years ago originally as an orphanage. The area, with a troubled history, plans to transform into a creative center with a museum and a memorial site. So far, the spaces are occasionally open to the public and are used for various cultural and community events.
