Brno - The University of Brno will complete several large development projects next year with budgets in the hundreds of millions of crowns. Four new pavilions of the Center for Experimental, Systematic, and Ecological Biology (CESEB) will be opened in the Bohunice campus of Masaryk University. The largest university in Brno will also finish renovations and expansions of three older faculty campus areas. The Czech Technical University (VUT) and the University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences (VFU) are also developing their campuses.
The CESEB pavilions will be used for teaching and research by nearly 1,000 students and more than 250 employees from the Institute of Experimental Biology and the Institute of Botany and Zoology, which have so far been located in temporary premises. "The buildings are constructed, now the interiors are being equipped, and we plan to start operations in February," stated the university spokesperson Tereza Fojtová.
In 2014, Masaryk University will also complete the reconstruction of the Faculty of Informatics on Botanická Street, associated with the construction of a business incubator, a science and technology park, and a computer center for processing scientific data. The project has multiple parts; currently, a building for teaching and research is being constructed, for which the university has obtained 350 million crowns from the EU.
Construction works are ongoing at the Faculty of Arts, where builders are erecting a new building with six above-ground and two basement floors. The project also includes renovations of adjacent buildings and modifications to the courtyard. "The completion deadline for the reconstruction is the first half of 2015, with the possibility that teaching could start in the renovated spaces from the autumn semester of the academic year 2014/2015," stated Fojtová. The school has 571 million from the EU structural funds and the state budget for the project. By the end of 2014, a new five-story building with a library and facilities for teaching and the work of scientific teams will be constructed on the premises of the Faculty of Education on Poříčí at a cost of 90 million crowns.
VUT is completing its part of CEITEC in the campus Pod Palackého vrchem, which is a center of excellence in the fields of life sciences, advanced materials, and technologies, created in Brno thanks to a five billion crown financial injection from the European Union. In the summer, the construction of the AdMaS research center, focused on building materials, should be completed in the VUT campus. VUT received 818 million crowns for its construction and equipment. The Brno Technical University is also renovating several of its older buildings, including the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, which was once the tallest building in the city.
However, the construction plans of VUT do not end there. "VUT is taking the necessary steps to begin construction of a new building for the Faculty of Fine Arts before the end of 2014," stated the treasurer Vladimír Kotek.
The University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences has begun construction of Pavilion of Pharmacy II this year and is expected to complete it next year. The construction of the Center for Meat Technology and Meat Products at a cost of 56 million crowns should also be completed. The school will gain not only spaces for teaching and research in the field of hygiene and technology of animal food products but also a workshop for processing meat and meat products. The study of meat processing is a mandatory part of the training for veterinary doctors.
