Jaroměř (Náchodsko) - Builders in Jaroměř in the Náchod region are constructing the Komenského bridge. The original bridge for pedestrians and cyclists was damaged by last year's flood and had to be torn down. The new bridge, costing 27 million crowns, is expected to be completed by February 5 of next year, said the mayor of Jaroměř, Jiří Klepsa, today to ČTK.

"We managed to obtain a subsidy of over 18 million crowns; the rest is secured from our own budget, but we are trying to get funding from the solidarity fund,” Klepsa said. The builders are currently working on securing the riverbank pillars and part of the embankment at the bridge site. "The steel structure of the bridge, which is being prepared outside of Jaroměř, should span the river by the end of the year, after which finishing works will continue,” Klepsa said.
The flooded Elbe split the pillar of the original bridge in the middle of the river at the beginning of last June, and an iron footbridge also collapsed from the bridge. The bridge, which was primarily a connection between the Na Ostrově school and the main square, was built in 1884, with a side footbridge added in 1931. After the flood and the removal of the original bridge, the town hall considered building a temporary bridge. In July, however, they abandoned their plan due to the high cost of temporary bridging. The architectural competition was won by the design of architect Mirko Bauma, who was also joined by David Baroš and Vladimír Janata. A total of over fifty proposals participated in the competition.
