Olomouc – The Olomouc Archdiocese has begun the reconstruction of the historic building of its headquarters on Biskupské Square in the center of Olomouc, which provides a background for several dozen employees. The repair of the property from the late 17th century will require an investment of over 100 million crowns. The project also includes modifications that will reduce the energy needs of the building. Officials are expected to move back into the renovated archbishop's residence next summer. Jan Smítal from the archdiocese's construction department communicated this to ČTK today.

According to Smítal, the curia building in the center of Olomouc underwent a significant renovation more than 100 years ago, and since then, there has been little significant investment in the property. The roof is in poor condition, and many parts need replacing. The window sashes and frames also require repairs. "In the basements and non-basement areas, the masonry is degrading due to moisture, and in several places, there are noticeable structural defects in the brickwork or vaults. The installations are also inadequate," Smítal stated.

The reconstruction aims to improve the currently poor technical condition of the building, increase energy efficiency, and optimize the arrangement of individual spaces. "The building is located in a heritage zone, and thus, it is not possible to insulate its facade," Smítal pointed out. Therefore, builders will replace the roofing, insulate the attic, and install new windows with better thermal parameters. These modifications are expected to achieve at least a fifteen percent saving in thermal energy. "Although gas heating will be temporarily maintained, there are plans for the future to use heat pumps. A new heating system is already being prepared for this," Smítal said. The archdiocese intends to apply for a grant for modifications that will reduce energy consumption.

According to Smítal, the project also places a strong emphasis on improving the operational parameters of the building. "The arrangement of individual departments, whose previous layout was based more on the gradual development of needs, is now receiving a straightforward concept and will contribute to better orientation. It will also simplify the mutual coordination of cooperating departments," he added.
