In the historic port of the picturesque French city of Le Havre, a "water world" designed by this year's Pritzker Prize winner Jean Nouvel was recently opened. The simple rectangular mass does not stand out in the context of the surrounding predominantly industrial port structures. The contrasting concept of the dark exterior cladding and the dreamily white mosaic inside enhances the impact of the building.
The wellness center inspired by Roman baths offers a range of water attractions and treatments over an area of 5000 m², enriched with a unique atmosphere of tranquility and relaxation. Exceptional work with light, color, and acoustics makes this place not only a temple of the body but also of the soul.
Although white is the dominant color, each functional unit has its own distinctive atmosphere created primarily by the textures of surfaces, the depth or height of individual spaces, and their illumination.
Each of the pools: swimming pool, children's pool, whirlpool, and steam bath are designed, illuminated, and placed in space in such a way that they create specific private, non-disruptive areas. Together with the outdoor pool, the complex becomes an attractive destination in all seasons.
The project was born from a competition announced in 2004, in which Jean Nouvel's team won.
The harbor docks in the southern corner of the ancient city of Le Havre are among the oldest in France. The entire area is currently being massively revitalized and continuously enriched with a whole range of functions - leisure activities, culture, shopping centers, as well as housing and parks.
Jean Nouvel has contributed to this extensive renewal plan not only with the aforementioned wellness center but also with the project The Sea and Sustainable Development Centre, which upon completion in 2011 is expected to become a landmark of the renewed urban area.
Despite the predominantly commercial focus, the project for a 120-meter high steel tower is intended to reflect the industrial values of the original buildings while emphasizing environmental sustainability. The structure is to include spaces for exhibitions, an aquarium, a meteorological station, and a restaurant with a panoramic 360° view.
