Riyadh - Saudi Arabia is preparing a generous construction of an underground metro in its capital, aiming to have the most luxurious metro in the world within four years. This was shown by a competition for the design of a central station, which was won by British architect Zaha Hadid: according to her vision, a generous futuristic space full of modern technologies and expensive materials will be created. This was reported today by the British newspaper The Independent, which also published visualizations of the project.
The new public transportation system in Riyadh was initiated by King Abdullah. It is expected that in just four years, six metro lines will operate in the five-million-strong capital.
Hadid will be responsible for the construction of the expansive station in the financial district named after the king. It will be a multi-level intersection of routes, where pedestrians will move across four levels via suspended walkways and escalators. Some trains will pass through glass tubes, and from the outside, the building is intended to resemble a transatlantic liner. The architect also plans to use very expensive materials, such as marble and gold.
Sixty-three-year-old Hadid is one of the most recognized names in world architecture. She has received numerous prestigious awards for her work, including the Pritzker Prize, which she won in 2004 as the very first woman in its history. She is also a two-time recipient of the Stirling Prize for British architects. Among her most famous buildings are the MAXXI Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome, the Opera House in Guangzhou, China, and the Aquatics Centre for the London Olympics.
