A new skyscraper is being prepared for construction in New York, designed by Frank Gehry. Frank Gehry hadn't had much luck with projects in New York for a long time. Several of his projects, whether it was a house for Christophe de Menil from the early eighties, or the later design for the Guggenheim Museum and the extensive Atlantic Yards development project, remained unrealized. His bad luck was broken only with the recently completed IAC building, although its clean appearance has reportedly already been disrupted by the installation of a huge company logo. The Beekman Tower skyscraper will be built in Manhattan near the Brooklyn Bridge and a few blocks from ground zero. An interesting aspect of the project is the intertwining of private and public interests - the first five floors will house a primary school, while the upper floors will be residential. The façade of the school floors will be brick, while above, the building will exhibit Gehry's typical style - unlike the glass façade of the IAC, it will have a distinctive draped metal cladding. The skyscraper will comprise a total of 76 floors and 903 apartments.
