Two weeks ago, the architectural office Herzog & de Meuron presented, together with the mayor of the French city of Bordeaux, Alain Juppé, the project for a football stadium, where matches of the European Championship Euro 2016 will take place. The association Stade Bordeaux Atlantique will be responsible for the financing, operation, and maintenance of the new stadium. The surrounding area of the stadium has been entrusted to landscape architect Michel Desvigne. The H&deM design consists of a dense forest of slender white columns supporting a rectangular roof. Daylight will filter into the stadium through glazed slits in the roof. The facility for 43,000 spectators will, in addition to football matches, also cater to the local rugby club. The stadium will also serve to host large concerts, cultural events, and is expected to attract more artists on their European tours. The current art-deco stadium from 1938 could not be expanded or adapted for Euro 2016 but will be preserved.
