Taipei - Ten years ago, on December 31, 2004, the then tallest skyscraper in the world, Taipei 101, was ceremonially opened in Taiwan. The foundation stone of the 509-meter tall building with 101 floors was laid six years earlier. However, at the beginning of January 2010, the tallest standing building became the 828-meter tall Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The building, which is covered in tinted glass reflecting the heavens and vaguely resembling a bamboo stalk, was designed by the Taiwanese architectural firm C. Y. Lee & Partners, and the cost of its construction exceeded $1.8 billion (approximately 33 billion korunas). Taipei 101 displaced the two Malaysian Petronas Towers, measuring 452 meters, from the top of the list of the world's tallest buildings in 2004.
