150 years ago, the emperor opened the new Vienna boulevard Ringstrasse

Vienna/Prague - The Austrian capital Vienna has many landmarks that attract crowds of tourists. One of the symbols of the city is the exhibition ring boulevard Ringstrasse, lined with a number of significant public buildings from the State Opera, Burgtheater, parliament, the new city hall, university, stock exchange to museums, parks, and private palaces. The boulevard was created at the command of Emperor Franz Joseph I, who personally opened it on May 1st, 150 years ago.

The more than five kilometers long Ringstrasse around the inner city arose in the place of the city walls, which were demolished after 1857. Its form was shaped by architect Ludwig Förster, with builders such as Theophil Hansen, Karl Freiherr Hasenauer, Gottfried Semper, Heinrich Ferstel, and Friedrich Schmidt participating in it. The buildings here even gave their name to an entire architectural style as a branch of historicism - the Ringstrasse style. The construction of the ring boulevard became a model for many other cities, especially from the then Habsburg monarchy. Architect Förster also contributed to the creation of a similar ring boulevard in Brno.
