Paris - The new concert hall of the Paris Philharmonic will be designed by the renowned French architect Jean Nouvel. This was announced by the office of French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin. The hall, with a capacity of 2400 seats, which is set to rise in the Paris area of Parc de la Villette, is expected to open to the public in 2012.
Nouvel's project, which surpassed another 97 proposals, will according to de Villepin be "one of the new and strong architectural endeavors that Paris needs". The concert hall will be located in the Parc de Villette area, where, for example, the science museum already stands.
The sixty-one-year-old architect has already made significant contributions to the current appearance of Paris and other French cities several times. He is especially known for the project of the Arab Institute in Paris (1987), the Cartier Foundation headquarters in Paris (1994), and the Opera in Lyon (1993).
Nouvel is also the author of the design for the multipurpose building Golden Angel in Prague's Smíchov, which was declared the Czech Building of the Year in September 2001.
