New York - New York Governor Andrew Cuomo presented plans for a major reconstruction of LaGuardia Airport, one of the busiest in the US, last night. The changes are expected to double the aircraft operating space. The reconstruction is set to begin next year, with the first renovated part of the airport opening to travelers in 2019, BBC reported.

Vice President Joe Biden, who previously stated that LaGuardia looks like an airport in a third-world country, also attended the reconstruction announcement. The airport, located in the Queens neighborhood and named after Fiorello La Guardia, the former mayor who had it built, is often rated by travelers as one of the worst in the US.
Cuomo added that Biden helped secure federal funding for the project. Part of the planned four billion USD (97.6 billion CZK) will also be funded by Delta Airlines.
Due to its short runways surrounded by water, some pilots nicknamed the airport "USS LaGuardia." USS is an abbreviation for vessels of the US Navy. According to pilots, landing at this airport is similar to landing on an aircraft carrier. The plan includes the creation of 3.2 kilometers of new runways, which should make landing easier for pilots.
LaGuardia is the smallest of New York's three commercial airports. It is popular due to its proximity to Manhattan, located 13 kilometers away. Last year, it served 27 million passengers, according to Reuters.
