American architect Scott Merrill was announced as the laureate of the Driehaus Prize for Classical Architecture on January 22, 2016. This prestigious global award for contemporary traditionalist architects, accompanied by a monetary prize of $200,000, was granted to him by a committee established by the School of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame in the USA. Its members include architects Michael Lykoudis, Léon Krier, and Demetri Porphyrios, critics Paul Goldberger and Witold Rybczynski, the founder of the city of Seaside Robert Davis, and the emerita president of the American Academy in Rome, Adele Chatfield-Taylor. The award will be presented on March 19, 2016, at a ceremony in Chicago. At the same time, the Henry Hope Reed Award ($50,000) for the cultivation and promotion of traditional building and art was awarded to Eusebio Leal Spengler, a historian and head of the urban preservation and restoration program of the historic center of the Cuban capital, Havana.

Scott Merrill studied architecture at the University of Virginia and Yale. In 1990, he founded a design office in Florida, where he currently collaborates with two other partners, George Pastor and David Colgan. Numerous completed projects include residential and public buildings, as well as urban complexes in the USA, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates. Among the most well-known are the buildings in Seaside and Windsor, Florida, which are considered icons of New Urbanism.
