David Vávra

David Vávra is not only a renowned actor and popularizer of architecture (the "Šumná města" and "Šumné stopy" cycles with Radovan Lipus), but he is also an architect. The Brno reprise of the exhibition by David Vávra, prepared by the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery, brings a retrospective of his architectural and artistic work.

“When I saw my dad at the drawing board, I declared that I wanted to be an architect too. At the age of nine, I was drawing hotels, cafés, trains, rivers, and even Vinetou with thick markers that had a captivating scent. Then teachers in art education began to educate me, and I found unattainable role models in the history of world art. At about thirty, I felt the desire to return to the creative freedom of four years, and for the next thirty years, I have been trying to do so. It is often a race, a cross-country run, a sprint with obstacles, a triathlon, a marathon, in short, running with buildings,” explains the architect regarding the name of the exhibition.

The exhibition will showcase several dozen realizations from his studio's work, among which visitors will find not only a multitude of completed new buildings, interiors, and reconstructions but also architectural solutions for exhibitions and scenographic designs. Selected buildings, presented also in the form of models, will thus be complemented by original sketches and plans for unrealized or yet-to-be-completed projects, collages, as well as scenographic designs for theatrical plays.

The exhibition DAVID VÁVRA – RUNNING WITH BUILDINGS will be open from December 13, 2017, to January 28, 2018, at the Architecture Gallery Brno, Starobrněnská 18. The official opening of the exhibition with the participation of David Vávra will take place on Tuesday, December 12, 2017, at 18:00 in the spaces of the Architecture Gallery Brno, Starobrněnská 18.
