Qatar Railways has chosen UNStudio as the main architect for the Qatar Integrated Railway Project (QIRP). A key element of QIRP will be the network of metro lines – in the first phase with 35 planned stations, in the second phase with approximately 60 stations. The metro will represent the backbone of the entire public transport system in the capital city of Doha and its immediate surroundings. The whole network will connect not only Doha itself but also its satellites Al Khor and Al Wakrah-Mesaieed located to the north and south of the metropolis with four lines according to the project.
UNStudio's design creates a bridge between the past and the future of Qatar – drawing inspiration from the rich architectural tradition of the region while also presenting an effective vision for the modernization and sustainability of the system. The design further aims to integrate all functional and technological aspects of the stations and network of lines into a coherent architectural expression, with the intention of making the Qatari metro a world example of service provided by a public transport operator to users while also being considerate of the environment.
Ben van Berkel comments on the project: “The design of stations and train stations has always reflected the celebration of arrivals and departures. For QIRP, we developed an adaptive parametric system that creates open, well-lit, and welcoming interiors for each individual station. We have newly interpreted the features of traditional Qatari architecture to achieve new qualities that capture daylight and lead it deep into the interiors – creating an uplifting and illuminated atmosphere.”
