Regularly since 2000, a pavilion designed by a well-known architect appears for several months on the meadow in front of the Serpentine Gallery. In mid-January, it was reported that this year the design of the summer pavilion was entrusted to the father of the Bilbao effect. We thought that there was no city in the world that didn't have at least one building by Frank Gehry. It is remarkable how the British have managed to keep his work as far away from their shores as possible. So far, Gehry has completed only one building here - Maggie's Centre in Scotland (2003).
These days, the design of the new pavilion was published on the gallery's website. The author declared about his massive beam construction with a glass roof: “My pavilion will function similarly to an amphitheater.” It will connect the gallery with Hyde Park like an urban street. Visitors will be able to walk freely through the building. Stairs on both longer sides of the pavilion will invite sitting. A glass 'canopy' protecting the interior space from rain, wind, and sun will be suspended from massive beams with the help of 'played out' metal tubes.
Due to experiences from last year, no exact opening date for the pavilion has been announced. Nevertheless, this event will not go unnoticed by the media sometime during July or August. Link>
